Tyler the Creator Chroma (ORIGINAL)

$250.00Price

This multimedia piece is something of a perfect storm.

I know absolutely nothing about the source art. We found it in a Goodwill Clearance Center bin. The orange rocky material is an enigma to us. The scenery was screaming for a Bigfoot crossing, ala Patterson Gimlan, like I tend to use across many themes. However, I decided to use Tyler the Creators look from his recent release, Chromakopia. I felt like the green suit is a great contrast to the bright orange of the piece. (*Note, apparently the orange strata is Baltic Amber, and popular in landscapes originating from Russia in the 1980's) the art is unsigned aside from my own.

That Amber presented a unique challenge. Since it is indeed rocky, like large grains of salt, I decided to paint Tyler on a piece of black foam board and fix him to it. The foam board was also gained from a visit to the bins. I liked this approach since Tylers skin tone is so very dark. It proved to be a great direction and really popped the bright green and yellow details of the costume.

The pose is a freeze frame of Tylers iconic dance for the promotion flash mob he did when the album was premiered. If you haven't seen it, go check it out. It's both odd and bold, like he is in my eyes.

You can see the painted figure on the black foam in the second image. Cutting that out was one of the most nerve racking experiences I have had in recent years. I am so very happy with the way the figure turned out, it seemed destined to get ruined in the cutting stage. Happily, it did not!

The scale of the figure and the pose slotted into the clearing of the trees perfectly in my opinion. The canopy and negative spaces delivering added motion to an already contorted pose.

That being the case, there is a lot of wear to be found on the art. That is what makes it so unique. Do not expect perfection. There may be broken parts, missing pieces and/or incomplete portions to the physical work. If that's not for you, there are many perfect replica prints available elsewhere on this site.
